Grand Valley State hosted last weekend’s tournament,
which was held at Rivertown Sports in Grandville, MI. The Lansing Hot Rods took advantage of the
home state tournament by winning 2 of the 3 games over the weekend to put the
Hot Rods back to an even .500 record at 3 wins 3 losses.
In the first game of the weekend on August 29th, the
Lansing Hot Rods lost a close one to the Chicago Outlaws 16-11. However, this is an improvement from last year’s
performance against the Outlaws in which the Hot Rods lost 25 to 3. The Chicago Outlaws are also the defending
CILL Champs so it was a moral victory in the eyes of the Hot Rods to play them
as close as they did. The Hot Rods hope
to get their revenge when they play them again in two weeks. Two players had hat tricks for the Hot Rods,
#23 Brandon Gates (Howell, Michigan) with 3 goals along with 1 assist, and #44
Josh Sejat (Grand Rapids, Michigan), who must have felt comfortable playing close
to his hometown, scoring 3 goals. In net
for the first half, #16 Daric Mueller (DeWitt, MI) had 24 saves, allowed 10
goals, and had a 71% save percentage, Sean Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) replaced
Daric for the second half. He allowed 6
goals off of 38 shots giving him an 84% save percentage.
Other Notables: Kyle Dommermuth (Erie, PA) (2g, 1a),
Stan Mackey (Hartland, MI), (1g, 3a), Tyler Ryan (Grosse Ile, MI) (1g, 1a),
Kyle Goehring (Fort Wayne, IN) (0g, 1a), Carlos Matta (DeWitt, MI) (0g, 1a),
Nick Knauf (DeWitt, MI) (1g, 0a), Aidan Jarmus (Winnipeg, MB) (0g, 1a)
The Lansing Hot Rods were able to bounce back after
the first loss with a victory in dominating fashion against the Grand Valley
State Lakers later that night. The Hot Rods
won by double digit points, 21 to 9, in what was GVSU’s first game against the
Hot Rods as a member of the CILL. Not
only was there a lot of scoring by several players for the Hot Rods, but all 12
field players contributed at least a point in the game, showing great teamwork
by every single player ultimately led them to this victory at Grand Valley’s
home arena. The point leaders were led by #1 Tyler Ryan (MSU) (3g,5a), #11
Carlos Matta (Indiana Tech) (4g,3a), #99 Stan Mackey (Ohio Valley) (3g, 1a),
and #33 Nick Knauf (Indiana Tech) (2g, 2a).
The rest of the point contributors are shown below. #16 Daric Mueller (Alma) and Sean Murphy (Dayton)
had two of their best games so far, with Daric’s stat line in the 1st
half being (6 GA, 24SVs, 80%), and Sean in net the 2nd half being (3
GA, 17 SVs, 85%). Both goalies recorded
season high save percentages. The Hot
Rods completed their best game of the season defensively, greatly due to
excellent goal tending by Mueller and Murphy.
Other Notables: Kyle Goehring (Indiana Tech) (2g,
0a), Alex Novak (South Holland, IL) (1g, 0a), Dylan Simmer (DeWitt, MI) (1g,
0a), Brandon Gates (Indiana Tech) (0g, 1a), Josh Sejat (Alma) (1g, 0a), Kyle
Dommermuth (Indiana Tech) (2g, 1a), Kyle Borek (Lansing, MI) (2g, 0a), Aidan
Jarmus (Indiana Tech) (0g, 1a)
In the final game of the weekend for the Hot Rods on
Sunday August 30th, the Detroit Coney Dogs did not end up having enough players
to field a team and had to forfeit, giving the Hot Rods their 3rd
win of the season and their second in a row.
They will look to build off their second game’s success in teamwork and
defense when they play next in Chicago on September 19th and 20th
against the Milwaukee Marauders, GVSU Lakers, and Chicago Outlaws.
Stat leaders after the second weekend of games: Carlos
Matta (8G, 10A), Tyler Ryan (4G, 8A), Stan Mackey (8G, 3A), Daric Mueller (62
GA, 153 SVs, 71 SV%), Sean Murphy (9 GA, 49 SVs, 84 SV%). Full player statistic can be viewed at 2015 Player Stats
